Artist Statement

My painting is abstracted landscape with narrative or symbolic allusions, grid-based paintings, and figurative work with an interest in portraitures.  In common is vivid colour, flat, stripped down images, and finding what feels honest whether painting from a headshot of a young professional or defining an abstracted world within the formal choices of structure, pattern, colour.   My subjects and themes come from current affairs and social justice, and from narratives on waking with the light, on humour, on living, and end days.

I studied in the early 90s in the BFA program at York University after several years of life drawing at The Toronto School of Art.  Other schools are the University of Toronto (Honours BA; MA courses: literature), George Brown College (trade certificate).   I’ve been in juried group exhibitions and have had solo shows since 1996 including at Rebecca Gallery, The Newman Gallery, The John B. Aird Gallery, The Music Gallery, The Distillery Art Fest, and Bloor West Village Art Tour in Toronto, The Art Bar, Guelph, Mahan Hall, Ganges, SSI, BC.   I received Jurors’ Choice awards for sculpture and painting in four of these shows.   Exhibiting more recently with solo shows at Rebecca Gallery (2019) and Back Lane Studios (2018), Toronto, and June 2022 at the Riverdale ArtWalk outdoor exhibition.
